“LA ALIANZA PARA EL PROGRESO ESTÁ MUERTA”:
reflections on the Alliance for Progress in the context of the american Containment Doctrine

The objective of this text is to analyze how the Alliance for Progress (APP) was configured in Latin America based on the official discourse, the implementation of the proposals and the results promised by the program. From 1960 onwards, US policy towards Latin America was changed by the advance of anti-American ideas on the continent. In reaction, the United States created, in 1961, the APP, an international program aimed at the economic and social development of Latin America. However, the main objective of the APP was to strengthen the Containment Doctrine (DC) in the area. The methodology includes the analysis of bibliographic material. The partial results indicate that the APP was important for DC in Latin America for facilitating foreign interference in local politics. It is concluded that the APP collaborated in the destabilization of social and political movements throughout the Latin American continent, especially those that aimed at anti-hegemonic projects. To carry out the research, a bibliographical study of a theoretical, historiographical and methodological nature is underway by authors Loureiro (2020), Ribeiro (2006), Roett (1972), Rémond (2003) and others.
